Healthy Heart Week

This was an annual emphasis of Hoag Hospital to educate and involve the greater Newport Beach community in cardiac health.

The campaign included a variety of PR methods:

  • An information booklet was direct mailed to thousands of households in the area.
  • Advertising was placed in local newspapers.
  • Different heart health presentations were held at brown bag lunches at the hospital during the emphasis week.
  • A health fair and cholesterol screenings took place on the beginning Saturday of the campaign at the hospital and an informational session and cholesterol screenings were held at the hospital’s Irvine clinic on the last Saturday of the campaign.

The Cardiac Conspiracy was written and produced in my second year at the hospital. It featured a 16-page mini-mystery novel with a detective (played by an actor) and personified cardiac risk factors that were drawn cartoon-style by an artist.

  • The booklet was mailed to homes in the Newport Beach area.
  • Healthy Heart Week events were held at the hospital each day of the campaign.
  • A health fair and cholesterol screenings were featured at the hospital on the first Saturday of the campaign and an information session at the hospital’s Irvine facility.
  • The PR department created a monologue performance version of the The Cardiac Conspiracy, featuring the actor and an interactive component that enabled several health fair attendees in light costuming to get involved. We also took the performance to a local elementary school where we distributed the booklet to students and involved several of them in the monologue.
